Module Title : Business

Course Objective
The purpose of this course is to introduce you to the many facets of the private enterprise system and of the businesses that operate within it. It is anticipated, though, that through your experiences in this course, you will gain a better understanding of what private enterprise is all about. It is hoped that this improved understanding will increase your appreciation of the private enterprise system and will assist you in planning both your academic program and future career.

In order to achieve the purpose as stated, the following goals have been set for your learning experiences in this course. This course should:

  • Acquaint you with the private enterprise system--the foundation upon which American business is built;
  • Acquaint you with the American economic system and contrast it to other possibilities;
  • Acquaint you with the aspects involved with starting a business;
  • Stimulate you to think about how you are affected by the business system and how you might someday fit into that system;
  • Acquaint you with the language of business.

Course Description
Topics covered include the US Business System and Conducting Business in US, Economic Challenges and Competing in Global Markets, Business Ethics and Responsibility, Managing and Organizing the Business Enterprise, Strategies for Success, Producing Goods and Services.

Course Requirement
There will be 8 multiple-choice exams and course assignments (Reaction Papers). The objective is not to test your memorization skills but your ability to readily assimilate business techniques and then apply the data and concepts to everyday problems and situations.

Course Assignments: Reaction Papers
The reaction paper is your opportunity to reflect and consider each chapter presented in this course.  It should contain your own thoughts, reactions, opinions, areas of agreement or disagreement that you arrive at as you progress through the course.  It may be a reaction to something you read in the text, or outside lecture material.  The paper should be hand-written in ink and a minimum of one page (front & back), single-spaced. 

All papers must be submitted at the end of the course.

Grading Procedure
Multiple-choice exams are valued at 70% of final grade; assignment is 30% of final grade.
